Signal and noise.
The useful information relevant to a question, considered against distracting or irrelevant variation.
Useful when more data or more alerts makes understanding harder.
“Improve the signal-to-noise ratio in this incident summary: keep evidence that changes the diagnosis.”
A closer look
A stream of alerts can contain many true observations without helping anyone decide what to do. Define the question or action first, then retain the evidence relevant to it. A detail can be useful for diagnosis even if it does not belong in the first notification.
Put it to work
“Group repeated alerts and surface the new information that changes the response.”
A useful distinction
Unwelcome evidence is not noise merely because it contradicts a preferred conclusion. Relevance, not convenience, determines its value.
