Cognitive load.
The mental effort required to understand information or carry out a task.
Useful when a workflow feels harder than its underlying task.
“Reduce the cognitive load of this checklist by grouping related steps and removing unnecessary decisions.”
A closer look
People have limited attention for remembering details, choosing between options, and interpreting unfamiliar language. Reduce avoidable effort while keeping the information needed for the task. Fewer visible elements do not help if people must now remember missing instructions.
Put it to work
“Keep the relevant totals visible while someone compares the proposals.”
A useful distinction
Visual simplicity and low cognitive load are related but different. A sparse interface can still demand substantial memory or interpretation.
