Canary release.

Introducing a change to a small portion of real traffic first, then expanding if the results are acceptable.

Useful when a full rollout would expose too many people to an unproven change.

“Use a canary release with five percent of traffic and defined rollback thresholds before expanding.”

A closer look

A small production rollout provides evidence from real conditions while limiting initial exposure. Compare appropriate health indicators with a baseline and decide how long to observe. Small samples and unrepresentative traffic can conceal failures, so choose the canary carefully.

Put it to work

“Release the new worker to one instance and compare failure rates before continuing.”

A useful distinction

A staging test does not itself constitute a canary release. A canary receives a limited share of real production use.
